Welcome to the new site for The Big Lake Times! A free press is one of the foundations of American democracy. This freedom means that journalists and media outlets have the right to publish news and opinions without government interference. This right is protected by a single line in the Constitution: Congress shall make no law…abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press. Thanks to this protection, reporters can investigate issues, ask tough questions, and share the truth—even when it challenges those in power. But this freedom isn’t unlimited. The government has at times argued that certain information—especially information related to national security—should be kept from the public. Democracy depends on an informed public. A free press investigates wrongdoing, sparks debate, challenges powerful leaders, and ensures people know the truth—and not just the version of the truth that the government wants to share. That’s why the Framers of the Constitution made press freedom a top priority, protecting it in the very first amendment to the Bill of Rights. The Big Lake Times is an example of Free Press.
